Is Winter Spiti Difficult?
Yes, winter Spiti is more challenging than a regular summer trip. Temperatures can fall well below freezing, roads can be affected by snowfall and some routes may become temporarily inaccessible.
That is why flexibility is important. The itinerary may need to change depending on weather, snowfall, road conditions and local travel advisories.
Travelling with an experienced Himalayan driver is strongly recommended.
What Should You Pack?
For a comfortable winter Spiti journey, carry:
- Heavy winter jacket
- Thermal innerwear
- Woollen sweaters
- Warm gloves
- Woollen socks
- Warm cap
- Waterproof and comfortable shoes
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Personal medicines
- Lip balm and moisturizer
- Power bank
- Reusable water bottle

Layering your clothes is usually more practical than carrying one extremely heavy jacket.

Winter Spiti can be enjoyed by families, but it is important to understand that the journey involves high altitude, long mountain drives and very cold weather.
Families travelling with children or elderly members should plan the trip carefully and keep the itinerary flexible.
Is Winter Spiti Safe?
Winter travel in the Himalayas requires extra caution. Weather can change quickly and snowfall may affect road conditions.
With proper planning, an experienced driver, suitable clothing and flexibility in the itinerary, the journey can be enjoyed safely. We always recommend giving priority to road and weather conditions rather than following a fixed schedule at any cost.
