Itinerary
Travel through the most scenic route covering Shimla – Kinnaur – Spiti – Manali, giving you the full experience of changing landscapes—from lush green valleys to cold desert mountains.
Your journey to Spiti Valley begins with an early morning pickup from Chandigarh or Delhi, marking the start of an unforgettable Himalayan adventure. As you leave the plains behind, the road gradually starts climbing towards the hills, and the change in landscape becomes immediately noticeable. The air feels fresher, the temperature drops slightly, and the surroundings turn lush green with pine forests and small hill towns.
The drive to Shimla is smooth and comfortable, passing through scenic routes like Kalka and Solan. You’ll notice charming roadside cafés, local dhabas, and beautiful valley views along the way. This first day is intentionally kept light so that your body starts adjusting to the altitude gradually, which is very important for a Spiti trip.
Upon reaching Shimla, you will check into your hotel and have some time to relax after the journey. In the evening, you can step out to explore the famous Mall Road, enjoy local street food, or simply take a peaceful walk at the Ridge while soaking in the colonial charm of this hill station. The weather is usually pleasant, making it perfect for a relaxed start.
This day is more about easing into the journey rather than rushing, allowing you to mentally prepare for the more adventurous days ahead.

Day 2 of your journey is where the real Himalayan road trip experience begins. After a relaxed night in Shimla, you should start early in the morning, ideally around 6:00–7:00 AM, because today’s drive is long but extremely scenic. As you leave Shimla, the traffic slowly fades away and you enter peaceful forest roads filled with tall pine and deodar trees. The cool mountain air and quiet surroundings make the drive refreshing right from the start.
Your first major stop is Narkanda, a beautiful hill town known for its apple orchards and wide-open mountain views. This is a perfect place to take a short break, have breakfast or tea, and stretch your legs. If you have some extra time and energy, you can take a detour to Hatu Peak, which offers one of the best panoramic views in the region. The view from the top is truly breathtaking, especially on clear days when you can see snow-covered Himalayan ranges.
After Narkanda, the journey continues downhill towards Rampur. This part of the drive is smooth but long, and you’ll start noticing a gradual change in the landscape. The lush greenery begins to fade, and the mountains take on a more rugged, rocky appearance. As you drive along the Sutlej River, the road becomes more adventurous with sharp turns and cliffside stretches, giving you a true feel of mountain driving.
From Rampur, you continue towards Karcham, where the route diverts into the stunning Sangla Valley. This is one of the most beautiful parts of the journey. As soon as you enter the valley, the scenery changes again—green fields, wooden houses, and the flowing Baspa River create a peaceful and picture-perfect environment. You may want to stop here for a quick photo break.
Finally, the last stretch takes you to Chitkul, the last inhabited village near the Indo-Tibet border. The road becomes narrower, but the views become even more mesmerizing. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and the Baspa River, Chitkul offers a raw and untouched Himalayan experience.
By the time you reach Chitkul in the evening, you’ll feel tired but completely satisfied. A walk by the river, fresh mountain air, and the quiet beauty of the village make it one of the most memorable stops of the trip.
After breakfast, you’ll head towards Kalpa, a small but incredibly scenic village in Kinnaur. The drive is short but filled with beautiful views of valleys and mountains.
Kalpa is best known for its direct view of the majestic Kinner Kailash range. The sight of these towering peaks, especially during sunrise or sunset, is something you won’t forget.
You can also explore nearby villages like Roghi, known for its cliffside views. The calm and quiet atmosphere of Kalpa gives you a chance to slow down and truly absorb the beauty of the Himalayas.
This is one of the most important days of your journey as you officially enter Spiti Valley. The landscape changes dramatically—from green valleys to barren mountains.
On the way, you’ll pass Nako village and visit the serene Nako Lake. Continuing further, you reach Tabo, home to the ancient Tabo Monastery.
The monastery is over a thousand years old and holds immense spiritual and historical significance. The calm atmosphere here is perfect for reflection.
📅 Day 6: Tabo to Kaza (via Dhankar)
After spending a peaceful night in Tabo, your morning begins in one of the oldest continuously inhabited monasteries in the Himalayas. If you wake up early, you can take a quiet walk around the village and feel the calmness that defines Spiti. After breakfast, the journey towards Kaza begins, but this is not just a transfer day—it’s filled with some of the most dramatic views of the entire trip.
A short drive from Tabo takes you to the stunning Dhankar Monastery, perched high on a cliff where the Spiti and Pin rivers meet. The location itself feels unreal, as if the monastery is hanging between the sky and the mountains. You can spend some time exploring the monastery and, if you are comfortable with a short trek, even visit Dhankar Lake for a panoramic view of the valley. The silence here is powerful—it’s one of those places where you naturally slow down and just take everything in.
From Dhankar, the road continues towards Kaza, the administrative and cultural center of Spiti Valley. Compared to the remote villages you’ve seen so far, Kaza feels a bit more lively. There are small cafés, local shops, and even bakeries where you can relax and enjoy a warm meal or coffee.
This day is also important for acclimatization, as Kaza sits at a higher altitude. It’s best to take it easy in the evening—avoid too much physical activity, stay hydrated, and allow your body to adjust. You can explore the local market, interact with locals, or simply rest at your hotel.
🚖 With Voyage de Himalaya tour And Taxi Service, the drive is comfortable and safe, especially on these narrow mountain roads where experienced drivers make all the difference
Today is one of the most exciting days of your Spiti journey, as you explore some of the highest inhabited places in the world. After breakfast, you start your sightseeing tour around Kaza, beginning with the iconic Key Monastery. Located on a hilltop, this monastery is the largest in Spiti and offers breathtaking views of the valley below. Watching the monks go about their daily routines adds a spiritual touch to your visit.
From Key Monastery, you continue towards Hikkim, home to the world’s highest post office. Sending a postcard from here is a unique experience that many travelers cherish. Next, you visit Komic, one of the highest motorable villages in the world. The air here is thin, the landscape is vast and open, and the sense of remoteness is truly special.
Your final stop is Langza village, known for its giant Buddha statue overlooking the valley. This village is also famous for marine fossils, as the entire region was once under the Tethys Sea millions of years ago. You might even find small fossils while walking around.
Throughout the day, you’ll notice how different life is in these high-altitude villages—simple, slow, and deeply connected to nature. By evening, you return to Kaza, feeling both tired and amazed by what you’ve experienced.
After breakfast, you begin your journey towards one of the most beautiful lakes in the Himalayas—Chandratal. The road from Kaza to Chandratal is adventurous, with rough patches, river crossings, and ever-changing landscapes. This is where the real off-road experience of Spiti comes alive.
On the way, you cross Kunzum Pass, a high mountain pass that acts as a gateway between Spiti and Lahaul. Travelers often stop here to take blessings at the small temple before continuing their journey. The views from Kunzum are vast and dramatic, with endless mountain ranges stretching as far as the eye can see.
From Kunzum, a narrow road leads to the magical Chandratal Lake. As you reach the lake, the first glimpse itself is unforgettable. The water reflects different shades of blue depending on the light, and the surrounding mountains add to its surreal beauty.
You’ll stay in camps near the lake, as construction near Chandratal is restricted. In the evening, take a short walk to the lake, enjoy the sunset, and experience the silence of nature. At night, if the sky is clear, you can witness a sky full of stars—something rarely seen in cities.
Today’s journey is both thrilling and scenic as you make your way from Chandratal to Manali. The route includes some challenging stretches, including water crossings and rough mountain roads, but it’s also one of the most adventurous parts of the trip.
As you move towards Manali, the landscape slowly starts changing again—from barren mountains to greener valleys. Crossing high-altitude roads like Rohtang Pass (if open) adds excitement to the journey.
After days of staying in remote villages, reaching Manali feels refreshing. You’ll notice better roads, more facilities, and a lively atmosphere. In the evening, you can relax, visit Mall Road, or simply enjoy a comfortable hotel stay.
